Due to the current pandemic situation, this Conference was posptponed to June 2021. We will soon inform about the new schedule and other changes.

Organização: Centro de Estudos Africanos da Universidade do Porto | Centro de História da Universidade de Lisboa

After the conferences in Rio de Janeiro, Lisbon and Maputo, the Centre for African Studies of the University of Porto and the Centre for History of the University of Lisbon co-organize the VI International Meeting on Sport and Leisure in Africa, to be held on 25 and 26 June 2020 at the Faculty of Letters of the University of Porto, Portugal. The organization is also shared with the Sport - Laboratory of History of Sport and Leisure, UFRJ, the Center for African Studies, UFF, the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, the School of Sport Sciences of the University Eduardo Mondlane and the Pedagogical University of Maputo.
The main objective of this conference is to promote the exchange of experiences, opinions and reflections between researchers and students interested in the multiple manifestations and implications of leisure and sports practices in the African continent.
In this edition, the central theme will be Sport, leisure and the construction of the idea of nation in the African continent. Both an universal language and an element of a widespread popular culture, sport has become a vehicle for social interaction and a mainstay of group membership, asserting itself as a powerful tool for political identification, especially in Africa where it has replaced ideologies in this political and social role. Even without saying so, governments, while abdicating their ideological tone, promoted sporting demonstrations, which proved to be more crucial than any other discourse to cement, if not the nation, at least the state. At a time when nationalisms are resurgent on the international stage, in a controversial and conflicting way, we hope to take a look at the past and present of sports and leisure to better understand how such practices have been (and are) intertwined in the forge of discourses about African Nations, validating, for example, the appearance of perpetuity that is not so present in political discourses and practices.
We accept proposals, from any theoretical and disciplinary perspective, that will focus on sports and leisure practices on the African continent from the colonial to the postcolonial period. Regardless of the articulation with the main theme, proposals are expected to contribute to the accumulation of knowledge about the plurality of sports and leisure experiences in Africa and to the renewal of the analytical and critical interpretations of sport and leisure in the African continent.
